History

Wimborne Minster is a market town in Dorset in South West England. Situated near the rivers Stour and Allen Wimborne offers a variety of shops and pubs, and is the home of the famous Wimborne Market, one of the largest markets in the south of England.

Wimborne has some great architecture dating back to the 15th century with interesting examples that include the 900 year old Wimborne Minster, the Town Hall, the Priest’s House Museum and the Tivoli Theatre, a 1930’s art deco cinema and theatre.

WWimborne Minster Church is a Saxon Church with Norman and Gothic architecture and is famous for its unique chained library and the tombs of King Ethelred the brother of Alfred the Great. It also has the tombs of John Beaufort the Duke of Somerset and his duchess who were the grandparents of King Henry VII of England.

Since 1980 the town has been host to the Wimborne Folk Festival the annual weekend event of traditional folk music. The festival is definitely the town’s major event of the year and is one of the largest in the country attended by over 15,000 people.
